Vocabulary and Grammar for Lesson 5 (talking about pens, paper and books)

  • Point to each word, say it, and have students repeat
  • Any combination of words from each column is a valid sentence’,except
    • only use yì  with diǎn
    • don’ change the word order

Practice: 笔,纸,书

  • Arrange bottles on the front table (五支笔,六张纸,七本书)
  • Point to each pile, say its name, have them repeat
  • Then ask each student to say the name you point to

Practice: 有

  • It is a verb that means ” to have something”, learned in last lesson
  • Hand one bottle of water to half of the students
  • Ask 你有[笔]吗?(Response: 有/没有 )
  • Be sure to give them a chance to say 没有 

Practice: 有 and 要

  • Offer a book to a student, say “你要吗?”
  • Use hand signal to suggest answer: thumb up or waggle hand
  • Student must say 要 or 不要 (make it simple)
  • Ask a neighbor: 他有吗? Answer: 有 or 没有 
  • Do it around the room to get used to  要 and 有

Practice: 要

  • 我要[笔] (have students repeat)
  • 要 means to want something (say/repeat)
  • 不要 is don’t want something (say/repeat)
  • Ask student 你要[笔]吗?  Expect:要/不要
  • (give a hand signal for 不要)
  • Give a bottle to those who say “要”
  • Now ask each one

Practice: 支,张,本

  • These are nouns.  Remember what we learned last week?
  • Right! all nouns require classifier or measure word
  • Have students repeat, as you point to piles:  五支笔,六张纸,七本书

Practice: 几

  • The question “你有几瓶水?” can answered  一瓶 , or 一瓶水, but not 一 
  • This is the equivalent of “one”, or “a”
  • Say 一本,两本,三本,  have students repeat
  • Use props to ask each student “几本[书]”

Practice: 给

  • Action verb.  the first one we have learned
  • Have students repeat 我给你[纸]
  • “I give you paper”
  • Ask students: 你给他纸? Expect: 给/不给 

Practice: 一点

  • 点 means “dot” as a noun, or “a small amount” as an adjective
  • In 一点[] it’s like a measure word that only takes 一(yì)
  • Have students repeat 我要一点[纸]
  • Note that diǎn is like a classifier here

Practice: 还是

  • It is an actually a question word, no 吗 required
  • Have students repeat [纸] 还是 [书] (and other variations)
  • Ask each one 你要[笔] 还是 [书]?
  • Expect 我要 [书]

Practice: (好的,等一下,谢谢),欢迎,对不起

  • These are polite expressions
  • 好的 – “okay”
  • 等一下 – “just a minute”
  • 谢谢 – “thank you”

Practice: 红,黑

  • These are adjectives describing color
  • Have students repeat 红笔 and 黑笔

Practice: 好喝

  • Means taste good (for beverages only, including soup)
  • Practice: Ask each student: 你的[啤酒]好喝吗?— 好喝!
