Vocabulary and Grammar for Lesson 7 (talking about food)

  • Point to each word, say it, and have students repeat

Practice: 吃,饺子,青菜,面条,白饭

  • Practice answers by holding up card, have students repeat
  • Then place one card in front of each student 
  • Ask: Nǐ chī shénme ?  Expect: wǒ chī [jiǎozi]

Practice: 晚 and 芬

  • Practice answers by holding up multiple cards
  • Ask: Nǐ yào shénme?  Expect: liǎng [wǎn báifàn]

Practice: 想

  • Explain 想 and 要 are both modal verbs
  • While 要 can be also be a main verb, 想 changes meaning when its a modal verb
  • Their meaning is similar but 想 is a little less emphatic than 要
  • Ask: Nǐ xiǎng chī shénme?  Expect: yì fèn miàntiáo

Practice: 想要 

  • Explain that 要 is just a place holder, since 想 can not stand alone
  • Ask: Nǐ xiǎng yào shénme? Expect: liǎng wǎn báifàn

Practice: 这里 

  • Explain 这里 is here, 那里 is there, and 哪里 is where
  • Ask: Zhèlǐ yǒu [píjiǔ] ma?  Expect: méi yǒu
  • Ask: Nàlǐ  yǒu [chá] ma?  Expect: yǒu
  • Ask: Nálǐ  yǒu [shuǐ] ?  Expect: zhèlǐ

Practice: 朋友 

  • Explain 你是我的朋友 the 的 is necessary
  • Ask: Nǐ shì wǒ de péngyou ma? Expect: shì (or) shì de
  • Ask: Tā shì nǐ de péngyou ma? Expect: shì (or) shì de
  • Ask: Shéi shì nǐ de péngyou? Expect: nǐ (or) tā

Materials and activities:

  • Consider bringing bottles of water and tea for props
  • Have dumplings, green vegetables, rice and noodles delivered to class
  • Bring chopsticks, bowls and cups pass out to students
  • Offer drinks and food to students
  • Then ask them 你朋友有什么? etc …
